Falling Autumn Leaves Lead to Blocked Drains and Gutters

Posted on October 4, 2013

As the autumn leaves begin to fall, they may start off looking pretty and picturesque as you walk through the park hearing the satisfying crunch beneath your winter boots. But the reality for those home owners can be much less appealing, when the wind and rain begins and you’re left with the nightmare of blocked drains.

A build-up of leaves can cause many potential problems to the home, not just blocked drains. Overflows of water down external walls can lead to nasty, unsightly damp patches on your walls and problems can also occur inside the house with toilets and sinks, so it’s important to sort the situation out when it first arises.

We’ve put together 3 simple tips to help you prevent finding yourself faced with blocked drains and gutters this autumn:

1)      The economically friendly way:

Put on your gardening gloves and collect all the fallen leaves that have collected in your drains and gutters, bag them up and take them to a compost heap  (I’m sure someone down your local allotments will be grateful for them), or better yet start your own compost heap! This way you’re getting rid of your problem, whilst helping create something good out of it too.

2)      The clever way:

You could invest in buying some drain guards for all the drains surrounding your property. This will guarantee stopping any unwanted leaves drifting and finding their way into your guttering and drainage systems. Just keep an eye on when the guards are getting full, and empty the leaves out so it can carry on collecting them for you.

3)      The old fashioned way:

If you don’t mind getting messy – and have the time- then put on your coat and gloves, brave the cold and scoop all the leaves out of the drains and gutters yourself.

However, there may be some stray leaves that are beyond your reach or sight, and if left they will decompose in your pipes and guttering, causing much worse problems later on. Specialist drain jetting can be the solution for clearing out old, decomposed leaves that are blocking your drains.

In the long term, regular maintenance is the way forward if you want to avoid the hassle of any unexpected blockages arising.  This way you can rest assured knowing that your drains are flowing freely, just as they should be.
